The two most popular types of metallic abrasives are steel shot and steel grit. The steel shot has a spherical shape and will leave the substrate surface with a smooth texture. Steel grit will etch and degrade the substrate surface because of its randomly angular nature. Each of these abrasives comes in a range of hardness and size options that work with diverse substrates. They are both powerful abrasives that can quickly penetrate and remove baked-on or caked-on surface debris.
Shot Blasting with Steel Grit & Steel Shot
In a shot blasting machine, to increase the strength and durability of a substrate on rough surfaces, shot blasting is a form of peening process. Steel shot and grit blasting systems use mechanical or centrifugal force to propel abrasive material to mechanically remove grease, carbon deposits, scale, oils, and oxides from metal part surfaces. Shot and grit blasting is the most effective method for preparing the surface of large or challenging items because of its aggression.
In large-scale operations like auto manufacturing and recycling facilities, this method can be used safely on all sorts of metals, including aluminum and white metal components. Dense materials, it has strong abrasive properties and eliminates surface dirt quickly.
The completed surface produced by the abrasive medium is extremely smooth and spotless and is ready for remanufacturing painting, or coating operations. The substrate surface will be clear of debris, providing a fantastic bonding surface for the coating or paint. As a result, it will last for a long period. There can be some ferrous residue on the substrate after the blasting operation.
